Potpourri turned party prop

January 29, 2013

Give that girl a bag of Potpourri and she turns it into a bouquet!

No kidding...
That's just what founder of reEVENT and lead floral artist of The Monarch Flower Co. Kelly Acock did with a found bag of potpourri, an old screwdriver, a reCLAIMED doily, a square piece of scrap styrofoam and some glue.

This is definitely a process of sorting out the matching pieces, deciding what is light enough for the bouquet and what actually will hold the glue.  Anything will work for a handle really, such as a cool stick, dowel rod, the leg off a small stool or an old screwdriver.  Cover the base of the styrofoam with the doily or other found material, glue the end of the handle and insert through the material into the styrofoam.  Then prop the handle upright in a sturdy pot or vase and get busy.  Sometimes it's easiest to start with the largest items first, then fill in the spaces with the other smaller items and leaves until no Styrofoam shows through.

Enjoy your newly reDESIGNED treasure...and enjoy the scent memory as well!

Going Green with Event Decor

January 13, 2013
{as seen in the Winter Issue of EA Bride

With Do It Yourself {aka DIY} and Eco CHIC on the rise, the most common choice for a DIY bride is the creation of décor elements throughout the festivities, especially the creation of table décor.  But be wary of purchasing decisions, as not all DIY is ‘green’.

Green

If the idea for the event aesthetic is to be ‘hands on’ and acquire all materials for centerpieces and other décor elements while considering the environment, but none of...

Think inside the vase

December 28, 2012
It's party and engagement season! For you Do It Yourself Divas, this means using what you have over and over in different ways and also purchasing reClaimed products and reDesigning them for centerpieces and other party focal points.

So why not think 'inside the vase' for a twist on adding color? It's so simple and adds a uniqueness that painting the outside just cannot match.

Of course you have been saving your spaghetti sauce and jelly jars. With the addition of a few votive cups...

Wrap it up

December 18, 2012

The Right Gift-Wrapping Materials:

Solid-color paper, solid ribbon in contrasting or complementary colors, tape and scissors (used only for cutting wrapping paper and ribbon, so they'll stay sharp and clean) are all you need for a basic, year-round wrap-it-all station.  When you succumb to purchasing holiday wrap, you limit yourself on its usefulness for other occasions.  So be sure to stock your wrapping kit with solid-color paper. It will be less expensive than the poinsettia and sleigh-...

Graveyard DIY

October 22, 2012

Halloween is filled with all things creepy and crafty, where cobwebs are welcomed and headstones are considered optimal décor.

Small personalized headstones are a blast to create for table centerpieces, place cards or popping in a floral arrangement.  All it takes is some Sahara foam (dry foam used for silk flower arranging), a knife and some letter presses (letter shapes that can be pressed into the foam).

Hedge Apple Happiness

October 5, 2012

Nature often generously gives us an amazing array of design items to utilize in propping and pimping out focal points within DIY home design.  Fall season is no different, bountiful in texture and rich in color.

Pumpkins and gourds with fall leaves and twigs take center stage most often packed, stacked and clustered in bins and on tables just screaming 'hey...it's FALL, come soak me up before the first dusting of all white snow.'

But what of the most often overlooked daring color and te...

reDESIGN a sign of the times

July 30, 2012

There's an old canvas print for sale on every block during yard sale season and in every Goodwill store across the nation.  Filled with outdated images of fruit nested in a bowl on a boring table.  All for the savory sweet price of around 5 dollars.  This is great news for the crafty and creative who retain pleasure in their walls dripping with power words of wisdom and adoration.

With stencils inside or out, a paint brush or roller, some removable adhesive and the paint of your choosing...

reCLAIMED Cake Bases and Centerpiece Lifts

July 19, 2012

Let’s start having some major fun and take advantage of a missed opportunity to make a statement with the cake base!!  Nothing bugs me more than a super neat cake lying flat and boring on a table way too big for it.  Ugh!

So why not ask a few questions before the set up?!

...such as ...

‘What size table is this going to be perched atop of?’… ‘Where in this  huge room shall it be placed?’... ‘What color of cloth shall accompany this delectable dessert?’….  THEN… a super co...

Bling It On!

June 13, 2012

Bling strands are still popular for event design…and still expensive!  Luckily, there is a trick for the DIY savvy to achieve the dripping bling look without the jaw dropping price.

Items to purchase include:

A roll {or more} of pearl strand.  These come in various pearl widths and colors, including iridescent, white, cream and more.  The iridescent most resembles a more expensive bling strand look.

Bling ornaments.  Generally found in a bag of 10 or more at your local wholesal...
